Cheers! Thursday, Oct 25, 2018 One of the few drawbacks to living here in Southern California is that there just aren't that many high quality barbecue restaurants around. Once in a great while, I find myself wanting to trade all of the fringe benefits of living here for being around a barbecue mecca like Memphis TN, Kansas City MO or Austin TX. I obviously come to my senses in rather short order, but the fact that I have that thought at all just goes to show how tempting well-made barbecue can be... READ MORE

But fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, and grandparents get involved in family owned efforts in reverse. They're more likely drawn by something in the blood, desires not quite explainable, and what ultimately seems inevitable... READ MORE

Naples Rib Company, a Long Beach restaurant that caters wedding receptions at several local venues, has a particularly popular, out-of-the-box mini-appetizer. "We have this thing called a brisketini. What we do is we take a plastic martini glass and we put barbecued beans at the bottom, then we put garlic mashed potatoes, and then we add chopped beef brisket on top, then drizzle it with barbecue sauce," Dave Ursini, owner of the restaurant, said. "It's like a mini barbecue martini." Read More

Our family spotlight this month is illuminating Fran and Karen Ursini, fifteen-year residents of Spyglass Hill. Their story began when they met at their church youth group in Chicago when they were both just fourteen. They soon began dating and attended high school together, as football player and cheerleader. Apparently their life together was meant to last as they recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary surrounded by their three children Dave, John, and Laura, their spouses, and their eight grandchildren. The Ursinis are presently the owners of the Newport Rib Company in Costa Mesa and Naples Rib Company in Long Beach, but their restaurant ties to this area began back in the mid sixties... Read More
